Due to the rain that passed through this morning, we didn’t make it out for a hike-a-bike this evening, so I can’t comment on the skyline side of Camp Fortune. What I can comment on is the Sunset race course, which we rode last night. I’m happy to report that the Camp Fortune crew have moved a lot of dirt and made for some very smooth sections at the top. The worst of the erosion has been corrected. And, bonus of bonuses, it is almost completely dry.

Get out there and ride it before the races chew it up again.

Looks like all the rain has passed for the next few days, so we should get an OMBA ride tomorrow night. Bring bug spray.

This past Saturday we got out to Mont St Marie to try out some of the new trails. The folks at Velo MSM have created a fantastic loop around the lake. The climb from the chairlift at the lake is great. No technical spots and the grade is gentle enough to be manageable while still giving a sense of accomplishment when you reach the top. The trail gets narrow in a few places; narrow enough to discomfort some of the newer riders with us. But if all you’ve ridden is South March Highlands, I highly recommend you take a trip up to Mont-St-Marie. I’d be remiss if didn’t mention the trail day, group ride, and party they’re hosting this coming Saturday (the 19th of May).

Last night I attended the OMBA “Strength In Numbers” movie premier. It was, as always, a good time. I was both shocked and pleased see a lot of faces I didn’t recognize. It’s good to see OMBA growing. I’m not sure how the boys at Phat Moose can keep any inventory when they keep giving it all away at the raffles.

Tonight I’ll be heading up to Camp Fortune tonight to check out the condition of the cross country trails. Tomorrow night I’ll follow that up with an evening of hike-a-bike to check out a few of the downhill trails. Thursday I’ll be lucky if I have enough strength left in my legs to walk up a flight of stairs.

Looking towards the weekend; if you aren’t going to the Velo MSM trail day and group ride, there’s the Beachburg Spring Chicken Enduro on Saturday (keep an eye out for the Rated M jersey). And on Sunday we’ve got the first clinic for the CycleFitChicks mtb group.

Welcome to the 2012 redesign.

It’s taken some work, but I’ve finally left notepad behind and moved to something more 21st century. Please bear with me as I get all the pages and content up.

Still riding?

This is a bit unreal. I’ve had some stellar riding the past few days. I normally consider riding mid October to be late season, but I’ve gotten out a handful of times in the past week and the conditions have been fantastic.

Check out this month’s Dirt Rag magazine for an article by yours truly!

Summer is drawing to a close, but there’s still plenty of excellent fall riding ahead. It may be cold, but we can finally stop drowning ourselves in mosquito spray!

Last day for lifts at Camp Fortune is Thanksgiving Monday, so get your gravity while you can.

Remember to keep an eye on the twitter feed.

This is a great class to do for all beginner mountain bikers! Matt helped to boost my confidence and increase my basic skills so that I can start to feel more comfortable on the trails. I was quite nervous on the trails, but Matt was patient and provided me with reassurance. He never pressured me when I was feeling unable to do something, but rather provided alternatives and words of encouragement.

It’s June already? Wow, how time flies. We’ve had a great start to the year already, including our first clinic with the wonderful ladies at CyclefitCHICKS.

Camp Fortune starts the lifts this Wednesday, so keep an eye out for the Rated M jersey.

Watch this space for more news; better yet, watch the twitter feed, since I actually update that…

The session was a lot of fun, very educational, and confidence inspiring. Matt’s a definite pro and a very good instructor; breaking every component of each lesson down to an accessible level. Attention was also very individualized and targeted to skill/experience levels of participants. This ensures that no one is left behind, and no one gets bored. More time could have been spent in trails; however this is understandably at Matt’s professional discretion – to be used in the interest of the whole group. Overall we had a great time and would definitely recommend it to anyone who could benefit.

I have been riding for many years, but over the last several years have ridden much less as a result of a growing family. My wife has ridden with me, but has never ridden much more than some of the easier Gatineau Park trails and Greenbelt trails.

For me, even the “Basic” skills you covered in this course helped me a lot. And reset many of the bad habits that I have been riding with. After your course, I find I am more confident and smoother on many obstacles and particular downhill sections. I am better balanced on my bike and find my control is better as a result of more weight on the front wheel.

My wife benefited as well…Here is her quote:

I thought it was really well done; they took the time to really show each of us the right techniques and had the patience to let us build our confidence to try them. I learned a lot and am really looking forward to go riding again.

Also she told me she would not have even attempted to ride some of the trails that we finished the day with had she not been in the class!

Thanks again
